Portugal has not yet experienced World Cup success. In 1966, they achieved their most outstanding achievement, taking third place.

In 1966, the Portuguese team made its first appearance in the FIFA World Cup. In their first season, they had a fantastic run and finished third. Despite being in a challenging group with Hungary, Brazil, and Bulgaria, Eusebio and the company prevailed.

Eusebio scored four of the five goals as they defeated North Korea 5-3 in the quarterfinals.

However, they were defeated by the ultimate victors in England in the semifinals thanks to a brace from Bobby Charlton. They beat the Soviets in the third-place tiebreaker to win the bronze medal.

During the tournament, Eusebio was in outstanding form and established a record for the Portuguese team by scoring nine goals, which still stands.

Portugal had to wait 36 years to requalify for the FIFA World Cup after their outstanding performance in 1966. However, they fell short in 2002 and were eliminated in the group phase after losing two of the three games.

They made it to the semifinals in 2006 after a powerful comeback. Cristiano Ronaldo, who was playing in his first World Cup, did not disappoint.

Even though he only had one goal, he still had an impressive game. At just 21 years and 132 days old, he scored against Iran to become the youngest Portuguese player to ever score in a FIFA World Cup.

After losing to the Spanish team in Round 16, Portugal in 2010 was eliminated. They finished with 5 points from three games, which qualified them for the knockout stages.

At the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, the Portuguese team once again lost in the pool stages. They lost against Germany 4-0 before drawing with the United States.

In 2018, the Portuguese team was eliminated by Uruguay in the World Cup’s Round of 16 thanks to two goals from Edinson Cavani.

With a magnificent hat-trick to take two points away from Spain, Ronaldo gave them a solid start to the season.
